A unicorn learns from a butterfly who speaks in riddles that she is the last of her kind and that the other unicorns had been chased by the red bull. The butterfly states “You can find the others if you are brave”. They passed down all the roads long ago and the Red Bull ran close behind them and covered their footprints.” (pg 10) She can’t imagine she is the last unicorn left so she sets out to discover the truth on a journey that takes her far from the safety and comfort of the forest. This increases her urge to continue on her pursuit to learn about herself and where the other unicorns like her are. Not being understood is a huge catalyst towards the unicorn’s journey. One night while sleeping, a spell is cast upon her by the witch Mommy Fortuna who runs a carnival in which common animals are made to appear as mythical creatures. The unicorn takes a risk and demonstrates bravery in her escape once freed by Fortuna’s magician, Schmendrick by making the decision to free all the captives including the enraged and dangerous harpy. This situation related to when the unicorn meets the red bull later in the story where she must remain brave through the encounter. Both of these situations would never have occurred had the unicorn stayed in her safe forest to live forever. The unicorn is growing both in knowledge and in courage. The unicorn finds out later on that she must be changed into a human by Schmendrick to enter the king’s castle safely in her search for the unicorns. This worries the unicorn because as a human she is no longer immortal and would begin the aging process, but with her developed spirit and gallantry she agrees. This proves to be a challenge for her later in the story because she begins to forget what is was like to be a unicorn and even falls in love with Lir as a human. It took a lot of courage and bravery not to want to go back to being a unicorn right away. The unicorn also demonstrates her bravery by entering King Haggard’s castle. Haggard is known to trap unicorns and venturing in without knowing what the result would be is daring. After entering the castle the unicorn is brave enough to stay there until they discover where Haggard is keeping the unicorns. At this point in the

King Arthur and Spiderman are two fictitious characters that are both similar, and dissimilar to each other. In an excerpt from Joseph Campbell’s The Hero with a Thousand Faces, he writes about monomyth, which is a twelve step process that is divided into four sections. This represents a continuous cycle that the character in the story must go through in order to complete their journey. King Arthur and Spiderman follow the cycle of the Heroes Journey by events in their lives made parallel to the cycle of the Heroes Journey. King Arthur and Spiderman, although from two different ends of the spectrum, are actually alike, both coming from epic tales of struggles and triumph.…

Sitting at my desk, I stared down at my schoolwork while my mind remained static. Suddenly, I found myself beginning to radiate golden light as my body faded from existence; then before I knew it, I rematerialized out of thin air. This does not happen often, so I was rather confused as I stood atop a cloud, high up in the sky. That is, until I noticed a large, human-like figure appear before me in a holy light. He raised his hands and smiled down at me before bellowing out, “Behold, for it is I; Gabe Newell!”…

For a long time people have been using fairytales to teach valuable life lessons. Naturally there are many different accounts of each fairytale, but the majority of people usually divide them between the traditional and modern versions. Referring to the traditional often means the harsh lesson connected to the works by The Brothers Grimm while modern refers to the happy animated Disney interpretations. Looking past the differences in how The Brothers Grimm and Disney like to mood their stories they both share the similar themes of what jealousy and cruel acts can lead to, the envy of the evil Queen in Snow White, the rage and vanity of Gothel in Rapunzel, and the greed of Cinderella’s stepmother and sisters; however, there seems to be a controversy…

This fairy tale teaches society that even though someone may have achieved a heroic feat, such as the little mermaid saving the prince, they may not be renowned for it. This is evident when the little mermaid is rejected by the prince who thinks the young woman from the convent is his rescuer. The prince tells her, “The youngest of them found me on the shore, and saved my life. I saw her but twice, and she is the only one in the world whom I could love; but you are like her, and you have almost driven her image out of my mind”, showing that he truly loves his supposed rescuer (Andersen). That lesson of an unknown hero was lost as the tale was adapted into modern society.…
