At the beginning of the novel a major event happened. Liesel, her mother and her little brother are introduced. Immediately after this Liesel's mother leaves her behind. She doesn't know why and thinks she abandoned her, but little does she know that the Nazi's were behind this. Her little brother who was traveling with her died in her arms. This effects everyone in this novel as everyone is preparing for the bombings, but particularly Hans and Liesel. An example can be found on page ... "For Hans Hubermann, this uneasy development was actually a slight reprieve. At an unfortunate time, good luck had somehow found its way into his painting business." The paint business of Hans is booming and they can actually profit from this horrible situation they are in. Liesel accompanies Hans and also profits from this situation. She spends a lot of time with Hans and she has a lot of fun together with him.
The regime influence the characters in this novel greatly. Liesel's mother was taken away by the Nazi's and everything around her changes. She has to live a double life together with the Hubermann's to hide the fact they are hiding a Jew in their basement.
