WCAB (Pleasant Valley Prison). It all started when Patrick Lantz, a 33 year old correction officer, was driving home after work. He was fatally killed in a car accident after working overtime. His wife, Shannon Lantz, with four children, applied for workers’ compensation and received no benefits at all. Patrick Lantz worked a double shift for a total of 16 hours. He worked until 6 a.m. that morning. The court stated that a “special mission” had to be in place in order for Lantz’s family to receive death benefits. A special mission would apply if Lantz was fulfilling duties in relation to the employer, being in the employer’s employment, and acting in favor of the employer’s benefit or request. Overtime shifts to Lantz was nothing out of the ordinary and was of common concurrence. His commute to work was 85 miles one way from the Bakersfield area to Pleasant Valley. This case brings out the essence of workers’ compensation. It is not simply the equation of injury/death equals money. There are other a plentiful of other factors that considered and will approve or disapprove these claims. That’s the reason there are thousands of laws and acts out there--to form a justified ruling. Without the little details in every single law, people will take advantage of the ambiguity of the criterias and receive compensation to which they are not entitled
