The book was finally published by Simon & Schuster in 2011 and the next two in the trilogy were released in the two years following. Whilst the book’s main storyline draws inspiration from the family she met on 2008, Hodkin manages to incorporate a supernatural element into the series. She also includes minor aspects of her own life into the novel and each character such as her personal likes, dislikes and perspectives. For example, Hodkin and Mara Dyer’s character share a love of the book ‘Lolita’ by Vladimir Nabokov and a hatred of being out of control in a situation. Due to the series’ dark and paranormal nature she often finds herself writing intense passages intended to frighten or thrill the reader; when doing this she also tries to use her own fears as it makes it easier for her to passionately, and realistically, write the scene. These fears involve her loved ones being harmed, finding dolls in places they do not belong (as if they had moved themselves) and, as previously mentioned, losing control over oneself or a
