The Ultimate Game Changer Recent studies have shown, “Most researchers estimate that 3 to 5 percent of high school age athletes and 5 to 15 of adult athletes use performance-enhancing drugs (mainly anabolic steroids). The level of anabolic steroid use among young athletes exceeds use of any drugs other than alcohol, nicotine, or marijuana” (Kuhn,Wilson, & Swartzwelder 5). Steroids can provide athletic edge to their users; although they come with disadvantages, and overall they have a menacing effect to the sport as well as the user. Athletes at a professional level need to be under heavy enforcement of the steroid ban to prevent the younger kids from following in their footsteps. Although this is a valid point, caffeine doesn’t have anywhere near the dangerous effects that the steroids have. There should be nothing political about the decision to ban steroids if they just see the risk involved to the safety of the athlete and others competing against them. Some say the athletes will eventually find a way to use them and do so why not just make them legal. NFL stats show, “Over 20 players were suspended and fined for violations of the substance abuse policy” (Leroux 15). Many athletes can find away around the test and get away with using. So making it legal would just take that away and make it fair game for everyone. Although it would be fair that way you bring back in the whole danger
