The Ugly American Character Analysis

A German poet by the name of Johann Wolfgang once said “Go to foreign countries and you will get to know the good things one possesses at home” by reading the Ugly American it seems like all the characters can relate. Americans were genuinely trying to better Sarkhan but the communist weren’t really accepting to foreigners who were trying to come in their native homes and change how things were being done. The Americans were said to be completely different when they joined a different countries because of their luxurious style of living. Americans are said to feel like they are superior to countries because most countries aren’t as developed compared to the United States, this is not the case for some of characters in “The Ugly American”. John tries to do a good service for the people by helping the Sarkhanese with his milk and cattle but he is betrayed by ex-friend turned communist Deong. John Colvin is war veteran who also is a successful small businessman who runs the family’s milk business. Colvin had received word that Sarkhan is in danger of becoming a communist town, so he feels as though he owes the people something because back in his war days he had many exciting expeditions in Sarkhan. John Colvin returns to Sarkhan to set up his business. He was set up by his old friend Deong. He puts out a rumor that Colvin is trying to put a drug in the milk that would enable him to take advantage of Sarkhanese girls. John Colvin was beaten by a group of females who left him at the US Embassy. Colvin was sent home by Ambassador Sears but that didn’t last long because the new Ambassador actually liked what he was doing so ended up sending for to come him back to start up business again and the locals starting to benefit from his project.
