The Uglies Scott Westerfeld Essay

Do you always feel like when you try to joke around and people react differently than you had originally thought? Well in the book the Uglies by Scott Westerfeld, the main character Tally feels this way. Throughout the book, Tally has people laughing or being shocked about the actions that is being done or has brought to the area. Tally thinks that both people in both civilizations will act the opposite way of how they really had reacted. “Most of the Smokies were too shocked to resist, paralyzed by the terrible faces of their opponents.” (Westerfeld 275) This quote is saying that the Smokies were shocked that Special Circumstances came not knowing that someone was being hunted down. The second part is saying that the Smokies were terrified of the faces that their fellow peers had on their faces. Tally thought they were going to carry along and not care that Special Circumstances had came and invaded because sooner or later Special Circumstances were going to have to come for someone that is know in the Smoke and be brought back to New Pretty Town for the operation. Tally had mentioned that most of the people have never seen a cruel pretty and that was mostly why all were shocked not because of Tally but the pretties being so cruel. The Special had thrown himself off the roof of the roof to save her!” (Westerfeld 296) The first part of the quote is saying that the Special made a grunt and the hoverboard Tally was on was being pulled up into the air. The second and third part of the quote is saying that Tally has fallen off the board and a shadow went over her with a thud landing on the ground. The guard wanted to save Tally. Tally was expecting the guard to somehow remain calm and not jump off the roof . Tally had also expected him to call for help and would have escaped by that time.
