When someone asks you the question “What does it mean to be an American?” what are the first three things you think about? The first things that come to your mind might have to do with freedom, loyalty to the country itself, you might even think about the person that in your opinion embodies the American Character. But let me tell you, things aren’t as they used to be. The way you feel, do and express the characteristics of an American has changed. Let me explain why: When I am proud of someone, I automatically demonstrate my loyalty to them, simply due to the fact that I actually have to agree with what they have done or achieved and be OK with the way things turned out in the end. I firmly believe that any American that has uttered the words “I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.” is loyal to the country, as long as they don’t commit any kind of treason of course. I am not going to elaborate on the two types of Americans for the characteristic of loyalty, with the reasoning that just like the characteristics, their explanations also go hand in hand. As far as my knowledge about all things American goes, I am pretty certain that most of the population is proud of the country’s’ achievements. But then again, there are two kinds of Americans. For example, imagine that America has won a war. You are pretty proud aren’t you? That pride you feel also makes you loyal to America. Anyway, you are proud that the government in collaboration with the military has won a war. But are you part of the government or the military? If you aren’t, then you are a typical American. You are proud and loyal, but you didn’t fight in the war or weren’t involved in the bargains that had to be made to achieve this victory. But if you took part and did something, even an inkling of something that eventually led to this victory, you my friend are a true
