## The Two Most Important Lessons (And How to Kiss Self-Help Goodbye)

So I wrote a post on reddit talking about [my four agreements](https://www.reddit.com/r/DecidingToBeBetter/comments/4m2dp1/my_4_agreements/). My four agreements are inspired by don Miguel Ruiz 's book, *[The Four Agreements: A Practical Guide to Personal Freedom](http://amzn.to/1XWYXPC)*

I decided to take my six most important lessons I have listed in the [summary](http://badassu.net/summary/) and condense them to only four.

The simplicity makes my lessons more actionable, which I love.

However, four still seems like too much to hold in your head while going about our daily lives. Can I condense them to even less and make them even more actionable? No, I can 't. Those

Don 't underestimate these. Let 's go through each one by one.

##Organic Decision Making

Organic decision making is for the most part brainstorming with people you know.

But it 's much more than that. It 's about telling them what is on your mind, opening up about your true [heart 's desire](http://badassu.net/follow-your-heart/), and not holding anything back when it comes to your dreams.

It all comes down to the fact that, no matter how smart you are, two heads are better than one. You 'll get better results and a better chance of making your dreams come true by sharing them with others.

Sure, there are some cool self-help tactics out there on the internet, but how do you know the article you are reading has the answer to your problem? Should you change your [mindset](http://badassu.net/mindset-the-key-to-happiness/) or your [environment](http://badassu.net/simplicity/)? Which tactic should you use? Or is there something else you need to consider? You simply don 't

In other words, don 't just do it with your parents or spouse, find others to talk to about your problems.

So how does this fall into our four agreements?

First of all, it is **agreement #2: Use organic decision making**.

The first agreement is about our intuition: **Always listen to your intuition, agreement #1**.

When you talk to people about events in your life, you 'll eventually, if you haven 't already, come to the conclusion that [red flags](http://badassu.net/there-is-always-a-red-flag/) should never be ignored and [green flags](http://badassu.net/green-flags/) are to be trusted.

Next, when you open up to people about your deepest desires, you naturally connect to others. And that is **agreement #3: You are a part of the whole**. Remember, [happiness is external](http://badassu.net/is-true-happiness-internal-or-external/). In other words, happiness comes from our relationships.

And when you start opening up to people, you 'll find your group eventually.

Plus, if you are always doing organic decision making with your friends, it 's only a matter of time before you start planning for epic things, start to not take things so seriously, and start having fun each day. And that is **agreement #4: Do something epic each

“Go out and buy yourself something nice.” That’s the comforting phrase we often tell people close to us who are distraught or saddened by recent news. Even though it might seem childlike, the advice is usually well-intentioned, but might fall short when trying to boost a person’s overall happiness. I have chosen to identify and relate five moral lessons, or lessons in general used in the story and relate them to life in the twenty-first century; a little side note, there are countless things in this story that are real “emotion pullers” from the simple caring for people, to much larger examples. However, I am going to stray away from the obvious examples, such as “Hey, let’s not have another mass genocide.” because that's too blatant and we know already not to repeat those things. First, the most apparent lesson is the value of friendship, trust, and support.…

A messy bedroom, Arctic Monkeys as background music, and an adolescent begrudgingly writing an essay for their twelfth grade English class is the current scene. This is the perspective of a senior; an absolutely glamorous time in life. It's an alarming thought that my high school career has brought me to this point as I search my mind for the correct words to advise you and my fingers tap away at my small keyboard. I'm supposed to give advice and guidance to the future graduates of our beloved Quincy High School, but there's little I can give that can be completely relatable to all. For example, I was raised by a single father, am a part-time cashier, and can barely figure out how the Pythagorean theorem will actually affect my adult life.…

Not only can I find meaning by nurturing my newfound friendships, but I can also generate meaning by maintaining the relationships with my family and friends back home. This source of generating meaning to contribute to my happiness is justified in the same way as strengthening my newfound friendships. According to Wolf’s theory, these actions have subjective appeal and objective validity. Nurturing these relationships will require special attention and care because I no longer see my family or old friends every day, therefore nurturing these relationships is done out of ‘reasons of love.’ I believe family and friends (whether old or new) are important examples of aspects of a happy life.…

In the Declaration of Independence Thomas Jefferson wrote that every single person has the right to “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness”. Well it’s interesting that he put “the pursuit” of happiness because happiness isn’t something that is guaranteed or something that can be bought. You have to bring happiness to your life by whatever means necessary. Whether it be music, art, literature, exploring, or just learning more about the world around us. For me personally there are three main sources that bring me happiness and just overall joy my family, work, and my best friend Caleb.…

    Lesson Before Dying

The main contention of the book A Lesson Before Dying is the inequality between white and black people. Throughout the book we see a change in the characters’ attitudes to this situation forced upon them by society. The author’s details suggest the ability to change the world through your beliefs and what you know is true. Jefferson and Grant’s realization helped to spark the country’s awareness to how wrong the oppression the majority of people were giving to African Americans everywhere. Jefferson’s realization that he could die a man and a martyr, Grant’s refusal to be a bystander to the constant racism, and the society’s reaction to victories similar to these helped carry out the civil rights movement that changed America forever.…

I am a senior this year, but this is only my second year in 4-H. Even though I have only been in 4-H for a couple years, I have learned a lot of life lessons. Many young members do not know the lessons they are learning as they grow up, but by the time they are my age they will understand it. Although 4-H is time consuming, it is teaching three very important lessons; hard work, time management/deadlines, and leadership. We hear people stress how important these three things are, but nobody ever teaches you how to do them. The reason behind that is that you have to teach yourself these through the activities you do.…
