A society depends greatly on the person who is leading it. If a leader is just and morally sound, his/her society prospers and flourishes. However, if a leader is corrupt and abuses his/her power, the society inevitably falls into turmoil and disaster. Suzanne Collins represents this through Katniss Everdeen, as she demonstrates through Katniss’s inner thoughts why President Alma Coin is eliminated and not given the chance to become leader of Panem. In Mockingjay, Katniss decides to kill President Coin because of her distrust towards Coin, their differing values, and Coin’s similarity to President Snow.

Thus, Katniss distrusts Coin’s ability to make just political decisions for the future of Panem, and a sense of doubt is instilled in Katniss about Coin’s capability to lead Panem. On the other hand, Katniss does not believe that Coin trusts her, and thinks that Coin may view her as a threat instead of an ally. After Peeta is sent to fight in Katniss’s squadron, Katniss asks Boggs, “‘Why does Coin want me dead now?’ ‘She denies she does… Here’s as much as I know… Sometime in the near future, this war will be resolved. A new leader will be chosen… you’ll throw support to someone. Would it be President Coin?... If your immediate answer isn’t Coin, you’re a threat. You’re the face of the rebellion” (Collins 265-266). Therefore, Coin thinks that Katniss’s critical mind and strong opinions are difficult to contain, and feels that Katniss is a threat to her future as a leader. Coin knows that Katniss is successful as the face of the revolution, and due to this, nearly the whole country supports Katniss’s opinions. Knowing that Katniss does not think that Coin should be in power, Coin distrusts Katniss’s loyalty to her, and thus plans to have her killed.
