The twelve stones that the twelve tribes of Israel carried cross the River Jordan serve as a “memorial” and a “reminder”, which the children of Israel are to keep alive the memory of crossing the Jordan River. The stones also stood as a monument for the future generations, according to Joshua 4:6-7 when Joshua said to the Israelites, “so that this may be a sign among you. When your children ask in time to come, what do those stones mean to you? Then you shall tell them that the waters of the Jordan were cut off in front of the art of the covenant of the LORD .
