The first story begins at part two of the book. The first event to occur is the sinking of the Tsimtsum. Pi’s mother, father, and brother, as well as the crew of the boat all go down with this ship. The truth is that the Tsimtsum sinks and Pi has no explanation for it, Pi tragically loses his whole family, he experiences the death of companions, and he is stranded at sea for 227 days. The other information that Pi gives is extraneous to the officials. From their perspective they only care about the sinking of the Tsimtsum. They want to know the reason why the ship sank, but they are not able to get this from either story. This leaves both the first story and the second story equally without value to the officials. All that matters is which one they find more interesting, entertaining, or better explains why Pi doesn’t know why the ship sunk. This is all up to
