In January 1962, Reverend Samuel Parris daughter Elizabeth Parris and niece Abigail Williams started to throw horrible fits, and other girls in the town also began to do the same. Soon after the girls began their fits the local doctor, William griggs, was called and diagnosed all the girls with bewitchment. The Girls on February, 29th claimed that three women in the town had afflicted them one of the women was Parris slave Tituba. All three women were interrogated but Tituba confessed and that there were other witches alongside her that were all serving the devil. After the woman's confession all three women were took to the city jail. Many others in the town were accused by the girls and t]Tituba and the trials continued to get more serious. When the people were brought in the courtroom Elizabeth Parris and her friends would be there and once they saw the accused victim they began to spasm, contortion, scream and writher.

In the beginning of the film it shows one of the protagonist, Abigail Williams played by Winona Ryder, and some of her friends chanting around a fire wishing for future husbands, but Abigail takes it too far and wishes for John Proctor's wife, Elizabeth Proctor's death so her and her ex lover could be together. Throughout the film Abigail and her friends claim that they were affiliated and can see the spirits of the witches in the town of Salem, but Abigail's main objective is to get rid of Elizabeth Proctor. Abigail and her friends have 20 people killed throughout their town, and had many others confess to witchery just so they could save their own lives for being killed. In the end Abigail's plan is turns on her and her former lover is accused for witchery and rejects her when she tries to confess her love once again.
