Standing up for what you believe in takes perseverance and courage as demonstrated in the short story “The Truth About Sharks” by Joan Bauer. This theme was not shown till later on in the text but the little bit it was shown played a huge role in the text. It was a nice day out, Beth was not a morning person and she was dragging along trying to wake herself up. That day she had her uncle's birthday party that she did not want to go to due to his sexiest jokes, and poor table ettiquit. For the special occasion she must go buy some new slacks from the superstore Mitchell Gails, a five storey shopping mall. Once she arrives she gets into a conversation with a sales woman named Hannah who just had gotten out of a tough relationship, after, she …show more content…
In the text she states “ Uncle Al was, basically subterranean.” (33) . This can show her being calm because even though she hated when her Uncle Al did this stuff and her mother yelled at her not to say anything to ruin his party, instead of arguing or talking back all she replied with a kind words that were nothing. After her mother said this Beth would not say anything knowing she would most likely get in trouble by her mother for disobeying what she ordered her daughter to do, stay quiet, as that is what she would do. Also in the text when she gets into Mitchell and Gails a five story shopping store. Also earlier before the last quote I said Beth states “I did not do morning” (32) . At first she had a meltdown screaming “I HATE THIS!” (32) . She recollects and gets ready to go run the errands she must run, this shows she was calm and mellow because instead of getting all pissed and rude about it she just greets her mom and starts her day.
