Truman’s world was entirely fake, but Truman did not even know about it. He had many chances to figure out that something was not right, but he just never noticed it. Truman used selective attention to focus on other things, not on what mattered. For example, every single day, events would keep happening like how the dog would always run up to him in the morning. Truman does not think about that it is repetitive since he does not really think about it. This does not really affect him so his brain does not focus on interpreting it. Another thing that changed his perception was using enculturation. The show did not want Truman to go out to the sea and found out what is out there so they controlled the way he saw things by having him encounter certain types of events. When he was little, his “dad” was lost in the sea leaving Truman all alone in the boat which made him afraid. Now, Truman has a fear of water so that he won’t be able to figure out that his life had been fake and is in a television show. Later however, Truman’s perception finally changes when he is able to go out in the sea to find the truth. He runs the boat into a wall which made Truman finally realize that this place was not real.
