I learnt a lot of things about Christopher Columbus that I never knew. I was never told how Columbus colonized the “New World,” or that he was one of the ones that started enslavement. When I was in elementary school, teachers never went that much into depth about Columbus. Subsequently I never knew that Columbus had the tribute system, in this systems the Native Americans had to live in colonies and collect up to 25 pounds of cotton. On Columbus’s first voyage, textbooks they would say that the weather was rough, but in Columbus’s journal he said that the weather was good sailing weather. The authors of textbooks also made up how long the voyage actually took. In textbooks it says it took two months. While, in Columbus’s journal he states that it only was a one month journey.
