After reading “The True Importance of Christopher Columbus,” my opinion of Christopher Columbus has changed tremendously. I thought that Columbus was an explorer; however, after reading the article I now know that he enslaved people and took their lands. The article I read, mentioned textbooks and how they left out important details about history. The authors of the textbooks were trying to make certain people look like a hero even though they had killed and hurt many people trying to accomplish their goals. The article gives multiple examples of how this happened. My opinion about Columbus has changed considerably due to the article “The True Importance of Christopher Columbus.”
I learnt a lot of things about Christopher Columbus that I never knew. I was never told how Columbus colonized the “New World,” or that he was one of the ones that started enslavement. When I was in elementary school, teachers never went that much into depth about Columbus. Subsequently I never knew that Columbus had the tribute system, in this systems the Native Americans had to live in colonies and collect up to 25 pounds of cotton. The authors of textbooks also made up how long the voyage actually took. In textbooks it says it took two months. While, in Columbus’s journal he states that it only was a one month journey. Textbook writers were adding little details to make history more exciting instead of telling the
