Courage. One word, seven letters, yet thousands of different definitions and interpretations. What does it mean to be courageous? Do you have to save a life to be courageous? Do you show courage in your everyday life? Google defines courage as the ability to do something that frightens one. Using that definition, I could say that I’m courageous because I rode a rollercoaster this fall for the first time and that frightened me. I’m even more frightened to sleep with my lamp off in my room but two nights ago, I did anyways. Do these things make me a courageous person? Can I really say that I, Faith Toutant, am courageous for doing these things? Some people may say no, some may say yes. To me, I see courage as something everyone has the potential to have. You don’t need to be a superhero to demonstrate courage. Courage is the strength you have when you’re faced with pain, danger, and grief. In The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, To Kill a Mockingbird, The Holocaust, and The Merchant of Venice, some events took place where people stepped up and were courageous. …show more content…
It was that one sentence that made Junior courageous and would forever change his life. Junior knew he would be treated poorly by the white kids at school, the Indians back on the Rez, and even by Rowdy but he continued to follow his dreams by going to Reardan. He faced white kids tormenting him for his ethnicity. One boy even asked him, “Did you know that Indians are living proof that niggers fuck buffalo?” (Alexie, 64). Junior could’ve quit then. He could’ve given up hope and gone back to the Rez schools where he would have no future, but he stayed.     Courage in To Kill a Mockingbird The main theme in To kill a mockingbird is courage and it is shown in many places throughout the book along with putting a huge impact on the book.
