Response to “The True Cost” : Take Action While both watching the documentary, “The True Cost” and discussing it in class, I kept thinking of the current lifestyle I live and the impact it has on my peers, the industry of manufacturing, and workers I have never met before. While in class I could not help but to feel proud of myself and my girlfriend, Gia, for our lifestyle choices, specifically when it comes to consumerism. The documentary was quick to point out social problems in exporting factory work to other countries and quick to make viewers view overwhelmed, hopeless, and helpless about the problem. Therefore, in a way, the documentary inadvertently attributes to the problem of brand loyalty and consumerism by overwhelming viewers …show more content…
I feel comfortable in saying it was our simultaneous experiences abroad that really inspired us to start acting upon our new knowledge. Although we went to separate countries and had completely different experiences, it was mutually beneficial since we could share our experiences of the marketplace from other parts of the world. She went to Chile and I went to Europe, but when we both came back we were thinking the same thing, that we needed to change our spending habits. Here is the importance she plays in this situation, had it just been myself, I do not know if I would still had changed my habits without her support. With what at first felt like everybody against my decision to buy consciously and those who thought I was silly, without her support, I may have fell to peer pressure and stopped. It started with changing the skin and beauty products I bought because as a college student it was something I had control over. First I started buying from Lush, but then I found a plethora of horrible reviews about how terrible they treat their employees. Fortunately, around the same time, I realized I could buy soaps from the Amish and support local stores and people at a much cheaper cost. Unfortunately, the Amish do not typically sell shampoo and conditioner, so I had to find another source for those products. Next is gathering information and narrowing done the route of the issue at hand to a single entity, source, person etc. so action can be taken. Unfortunately, the documentary does no different than any reporter does covering current topics and presents a infinite problem with many problems under, no solution, and belittles the value of simple steps individuals can take. What most people do not understand is they should not, they can not because that is not their purpose. Instead, their purpose is to start to inform or cause awareness and individuals should be taught to seek further information and confirm what they have heard. With the internet at the fingertips of most people living in first world countries, checking sources and seeking more information is something that can be down during the credits or
