Majority of women in the world believe that being that “ideal beauty” of what the world considers beautiful is top priority and is the sole reason of their existence. Women are given certain roles and expectations from the media. The true identity of a woman seems to have been lost. With that, many women are not even aware of what their identities and true purpose is. Instead of honoring a women of her individuality, her purpose and strengths, she is brained washed that a certain beauty is the most important objective to life. Women should be shown as having character. Character is the way someone thinks, feels, and behaves: someone’s personality. With character, the woman has wisdom, and with wisdom a woman has much to offer. A woman’s characteristics vary from her nurturing spirit, intelligent mind, remarkable strength, and her way of being a role model to society. These are the traits the media should display more often. Instead of displaying these traits, media shows women’s character as being what she looks like on the outside. Simone de Beauvoir author of 1952 book “The Second Sex” said, “Women need to take control of their identities and define themselves as they want to be, not as men have wanted them to be, and not let their biology determine their destines “ (247). Women shouldn’t sit back and be someone that they are not. They have characteristics that help mold the world and the people in it. The characteristics women portray are important in society.
