The Trophy Kids Go To Work

Millennials are not always labeled as being idle. They can also be recognized as a

great achiever. For example, let's say employees are working on a really hard project. The

projects are most likely taking up all the employee's work schedule. The Millennials, however,

are capable constructing their work schedule to get the project done. They will use their extra

work time to construct a creative project to amuse their employer. According to Ron Alsop, the

author of the essay “The ‘Trophy Kids’ Go To Work,” “Millennials were bred for achievement,

and most will work hard if the task is engaging and promises a tangible payoff .”Millennials are

not just only praised, but can be a positive achiever to get a task done.

Today, many past generations are critical of millennials and generation Z, however, this criticism seems misdirected and simply rash. There is a lot of contradictions in the analysis of this generation by social scientists. On one side, some believe this generation lacks motivation and independence, whereas other scientists analyze this generation as creative and optimistic. Social scientists are still researching this new cohort, but their research so far is in the positive light. Typically, if I were to describe a typical millennial, older generations may picture someone living out of their parent’s basement attached to their phones.…

In “The Beat Up Generation” (2014), written by Abby Ellin, she defines the Millenials as a generation that is spoiled, self-entitled and technology controlled. Despite the negative representation of Millenials, Ellin praises them for being hardworking, technology innovating and outspoken. Ellin offends Generation Y being viewed as lazy and having no motivation to work in order to further claim her purpose and because this was written for Psychology Today and published, her intended audience was for the general public who were most likely to be curious or knowledgeable about the Millenials. I wasn’t very shocked or angry of what Ellin wrote about Millenials since it was all true. Sure, we do come across as lazy, technology obsessed or as we have been named as “heads down generation” meaning we always have our head down looking into our phones but that is because of our generation like many generations before us, is flawed.…

This can impact the millennial employee’s identity considerably. If the other employees, who are not Millennials, have already stereotyped the Millennials and decided they are inferior employees it makes sense that the Millennials would reflect their expected behavior. If they are already disliked, it is not surprising that they would do less. Contrary, there are also many Millennials that work harder than any other individual in the office because they are “determined to be someone because time and time again, they are told that they can’t do something due to their lack of experience and drive” (Herman, Did You Know: Millennials Are Lazy). It is up to the millennial to determine to what extent he or she is willing…

Different age groups throughout the years have acquired a generic name that is used to describe the generation as one big group. The term Millennials have come about from the generation born between 1982 and 2004, and this group brings a lot of attention to themselves. These individuals are more focused on themselves and constantly post on social media what they are doing and where they are, all while needing reassurance from the rest of the world. Millennials have a stereotype for taking risks and behaving in a different manner than previous conservative and traditional generations. However, evidence shows there is a shift in tides when it comes to their behaviors. When it comes to the work environment, millennials are stereotyped as job hoppers. Employers and recruiters explain that, in terms of employment and attrition rate, millennials are likely to leave their current job in a few years. But a study according to the 2017 Deloitte Millennial Survey contradicts that stereotype.…

For a long time, older generations have liked to moan and bemoan about the younger generation. It has happened since at least the 1920s, when the new woman emerged and rejected the traditions of the Victorian era. Though this has almost become a “rite of passage” as said by Aaron Kaufman in “an Open Letter from a Millennial to Society,” it has made Millennials the “butt” of many mean jokes, and they have had to face many insults about how they are “the dumbest, laziest, most entitled, narcissistic, cocky and most coddled generation to ever live.” Fortunately, contrary to these assumptions, Millennials are not narcissistic or apathetic as they have a high percentage of volunteerism. They also aren’t wrong to feel entitled, which is the most…
