Death by Truth
The only thing stronger than fear is the lack of it. The fears of masses have timelessly been manipulated by the people who had none and we 're not scared to extort those of others. This had happened in the Salem Witchcraft Trials from 1692 to 1693 where 19 to 21 girls had been put to death by hanging because of claims they were witches and practicing witchcraft. Witchcraft they believed had come from the devil who they thought to be a real being living around them. This caused much fear and in result false accusations that were not factual nor with evidence were made about innocent people so blame could be taken off a person if you accused another. Tituba, Tituba…”(Miller 1057), set the stage for the rest of the play. Along with Betty Parris, the daughter of Reverend Parris, Abigail and she continued to accuse and put the blame on many women of witchcraft saying they had seen them with the devil. “You most certainly do, and you will free her from it now! When did you compact with the Devil”(Miller 1058)? Reverend Hale, was trying to place the blame on whoever he could to show he was a prominent religious man and was of authority. Though, he would later come to regret his decisions knowing the blood on his hands was innocent. The girls, Abigail Williams, Betty Parris, and now Mary Warren and Mercy Lewis, continued this act onto court where they again instead of confessing the truth continued to scapegoat others. “Why-? Why do you come yellow bird”(Miller 1100)? Abigail again lies and accuses Mary Warren, who was trying to help the Proctors, to save her lies from being reviled. Though Mary Warren,who had a tendency to switch loyalties, fearing Abigail’s actions turned back to the girls by accusing John Proctor of possessing her. Scapegoating did not put anyone out of danger, only place the danger with another for moments at a time, and so the circle
