Is the Trend Towards Online Learning in Higher Education Beneficial to Students?
Modern society has acquired the mindset that everything a person needs, must be easily accessible anywhere and at any time, that even includes their higher education. The trend towards online learning has grown substantially over the past decade. Sitting down in a face to face learning environment is becoming an “old school” trend that many are beginning to deter from for many reasons. For example, some believe that they learn better in a classroom, in front of a teacher. Consequently, some retain information better by visually seeing and hearing a lecture taught. In addition, it is argued that being able to interact with classmates face to face is easier and more motivating. For instance, if one needs help or advice on material that is being covered, and the instructor in unavailable, one can ask a fellow classmate for help. Another argument is that some lack the self-discipline and motivation it takes to be successful in an online learning setting. For example, it is believed that it is easier for one to forget when their assignments are due because there is no face to face interaction. Also, some people need a constant reminder of deadlines by instructor or classmates. Anyone can obtain a higher education through online learning, whether they are a stay at home parent, someone who travels often for their job, or even someone who is unable to afford reliable transportation.
