Surviving in the trenches: A narrative inquiry into queer teachers’ experiences and identity This study follows the lives of six gay and lesbian elementary and high school teachers and discusses with them the difficulties of being queer and being a teacher. It states that having both identities coincide is difficult if not impossible and that many teachers choose to hide their sexual identity. This only encourages heteronormativity and denies the school system’s ingrained idea that heterosexuality is the norm or a default. The teachers were found to not be officially and completely out to their school communities. Two of the teachers described that they were not explicit, but instead implicitly “out” and all of the other teachers said …show more content…
There is a significant amount of gravity in that decision and it is not something that one can take back. This article was important for me to read as a member of the queer community and as a member of the teaching community. One can quickly learn that queer future teachers have a big decision on their shoulders and weighing the pros and cons of each option is critical. On one hand homophobia is still a huge problem in today’s school system and heteronormativity is a virus that will only keep growing until a stop is put to it. On the other hand if teachers don’t present themselves as proud members of the LGBT community who will students have to look up to? By not being out teachers can involuntarily perpetuate heteronormativity and gender stereotypes. I was fortunate enough to have a teacher in high school who was openly lesbian and gender fluid and I’ve often noted that if it wasn’t for her I most likely wouldn’t have been able to come to terms with my own sexuality. She presented a safe space for all students and made me feel comfortable enough that I came out to her before I came out to my own parents. Before reading this article I had not considered the issues that she had experienced and continued to experience as an openly lesbian teacher. She had some issues with students and I

Laura Schlessinger, a popular American talk radio host, once said “When you’re the victim of the behavior, it’s black and white; when you're the perpetrator, there are a million shades.” Her words ring no more true than when examining a recent standoff between Gordon College and the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) concerning the role of religious freedom and the acceptability of harassment targeted at sexual orientation minorities. Gordon College seeks to maintain a religious policy which bars sexually intercourse outside of marriage, and consequently dating among LGBT students. The NEASC, who provides Gordon College it’s accreditation, has demanded the college reverse its policy and move towards more tolerant practices or risk losing accreditation as a higher education institution. Historically, society has continually strived towards equality and, in doing so, our understanding…

For example, official sexual education features examples of heterosexual relationships, and explanations in biology use heterosexually gendered examples when exploring plant reproduction (Pascoe, 2007, p. 27). By not including non-normative discourses within official school curriculum, teachers are implying that anything other that heterosexual values are seen as divergent from the norm (Pascoe, 2007, p. 27-28). Furthermore, though sexualized discussions are explicitly discouraged between teachers and students, sexual jokes and jabs still occur, even in official classroom settings (Pascoe, 2007, p.…

In addition, instructional materials and activities that are taught or seen around the school should not exclude, ridicule, or victimize against any student based on sexual preference or sexual identification. Principals should also prepare for meeting with nontraditional families and ensure inclusion of the school community members as well. Including more gender-neutral language is another change that has impacted instructors since not adhering or accepting the new social structure of homogeneity can be considered an unlawful defilement of their identity. With that said, by allowing a…

Those who were in charge at her school told her that the dress code was enforced so strictly for girls because certain clothing that girls wear can be “distracting” to young boys. Maggie Sunseri created a film the previous summer called, Shame: A Documentary on School Dress Code, where she interviewed a number of her classmates and also their principal. Many petitions are being signed by students that address the issue of sexism within the area of school dress code. One reason that this article was particular interesting was because it also addressed the way in which policies unfairly restrict transgender students.…

I agree with you the University is not failing to respect equality rights about sexual orientation. The primary cause is that Trinity Western is a private, Christian faith-based university legislated by British Columbia to aid the public. And the mission of this University is developing “Godly Christian leaders” while providing many educational programs. I can get a line here that two different rights under the Charter are colliding with each other. The equality right for lesbian or gay and freedom of rights to practice religion for TRU.…

The school resides in a rural section of the district and holds a very small-town atmosphere. It is common for the teachers to know their students outside of the classroom and can often relate them to siblings, parents, and or other family members. Over the past few years the school that use to have a relatively conservative culture has shifted to more of a liberal culture. More students come from families with LGTB parents and the student body’s sexual orientation is more diverse. Although the school continues to maintain European-American background with over 94% of its student body being of European ancestry, shifting attendance boundaries, economic decline, and an increasingly transient population have seen a dramatic increase in the number…

It is a hazard, both mentally and physically, to these transgender students attending an all women’s school. I have confidence that Padawer does a fine job informing us as readers on a modern issue like gender identity through stories of students at Wellesley College. They face complications such as bullying, humiliation, and sexual assault daily, and the problem is often neglected because of the fact that they are male. I understand why these trans male students think it is okay for them to attend an all women’s college. At one point in their life, they were women.…

“Boys will be boys” my mom said nonchalantly as I told her what had occurred in my last class period of the day. It baffled me how a teenage boy being mocked for his sexuality could be so trivial in her eyes. I didn’t understand how the struggle for gay rights was any different from black rights or feminism. To me we were all united, brought together by our interminable fight for equality and acceptance. As an amiable and peaceful introvert I find it difficult to stand up for what I believe is right.…

This is also an issue for boys, body performance in particular is crucial to their ability to maintain a hegemonic masculine identity (Mac an Ghaill 1996). Similarly, dis- identification with other male students becomes the norm otherwise their masculine identities can be questioned and may be called a ‘poof’. Hyams (2000) demonstrates the highly gendered character of school cultures in her study of young Latina women in Los Angeles, she demonstrates the integral relationship between their gender and sexual identities, in terms of victimisation and their historically low academic achievement. It is evident that the school is not really a safe space when it comes to expressing a non- heteronormative identity.…

I have been in war for about three years now, fighting and living in a condition people back home can never imagine, it is not easy, but I always think that we are doing this for the sake of our country, especially our loved ones. During the wars, we fight and live in trenches most of the time and we would line the trenches in a zigzag pattern so enemies fire will not be able to sweep along the whole length of the trench. Life in the trenches is not comfortable at all, but I guess we are all just used to it. The tight and small spaces are always wet and full of people and we can only sleeping standing or against the sandbags.…

In 1914 Australian men went out to sign up for war many not knowing what they were signing up for. The Australian troops had a tough life on the Western Front as they had to face horrid conditions not only fighting and risking lives for their country but living in places where you get bad trench conditions including trench foot and fever, have pests which bring diseases and steal your food, have health problems and not able to treat them as there isn’t much aid for everyone to be treated. The Australian Troops who lived in the trenches had to suffer the deafening sound of canon fire and the artillery but also many illnesses such as trench fever where they get a very high temperature, constant diarrhoea which made them weak and listless and not able to fight. The biggest problem was trench feet which was a fungal infection of feet caused by cold, wet and unsanitary trench conditions from all the mud that they had to walk through which lead it to the foot rotting inside and having to cut the foot off.…

A current issue in education is the lack of support of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender students (LGBT). Transgender refers to a person’s gender identify--a person’s innate sense of being male, female, or somewhere in between( Banks& Banks, 2013). School are starting altering these practices: inviting same-sex couples to prom, providing gender neutral or individual bathrooms and locker rooms for transgender student, and including LGBT people and perspectives in the curriculum (McCollum, 2010). With acceptance, this population still face discrimination and prejudice. In school, LGBT students are harassed and bullied.…
