Years ago, I had a cousin who was 23 years old and hoped to become a Doctor of Dentistry following completion of her degree. Back then, I lived in India with my father, mother, brother, and our close family members. My cousin began to show classic symptoms of pneumonia but nobody took notice of the progression until she started coughing up blood. My family took her to the nearest doctor who was villages away to diagnose her illness.
The healthcare system in India is very different from that of the United States; it does not exist. When we got to the doctor’s, staff demanded payment beforehand--it was very expensive. The months following his death were challenging, and at first I thought I was going through the burdens alone, but I soon learned I was not. My teachers and friends were invested in my well-being. I went to Malden High School, an arguably small school in a small city in the outskirts of Boston. Going through a small school enabled me to forge deep bonds with not only friends but also teachers and even the high school principal who made it his mission to know every single person that walked through his door. My teachers connected with me in a way I never thought would be possible, they pushed me to recognize that despite his death, it didn’t mean that I wasn’t going to become a pharmacist. Their drives, compassions, and sincerities for my academic and emotional well being propelled me to seek MCPHS. Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences was my dream school because not only did it compose of a small community but it was also a pharmacy school. I knew MCPHS was the right school for me the first hour I toured the small campus, and hoped that the next six years following my high school graduation I would spend them earning my Pharmacy Doctorate. However, my ambitions were short sighted because my SAT scores weren’t fitting to get into the Pharmacy
