How were slaves treated by their slaveholders?
Slaves were treated in an inhumane way. Once arriving in America, they were sold in auctions and then marked like cattle. They weren’t given the right to learn how to read and write in English and they finished their work for the day at sunset. It’s said that slaves were treated better in the US than they were in Central or South America, but it is still not how a person should be treated.
As a consequence of slaves being dehumanised, not many of them got to experience living to an old age. Between the years 1830 and 1860, only ten percent of the United States’ population were 50 years old or above.
