The kidneys are bean shaped organs, the size of fists located below the rib cage. The kidneys filter blood and get rid of waste in the body. Renal cell carcinoma is a disease in which malignant cells form in the lining of tubules of the kidneys, and it is the most common form of kidney cancer in adults. Kidney cancer was first reported in 1613 by Daniel Sennert who made a reference suggesting a tumor was appearing in the kidney. It was recorded in his text Practicae Medicinae in this Sennert states, “Moreover the swelling of bad kidneys which has the capacity to throw a person into cachexia and dropsy, is for the greater part incurable.” In 1826, a man named Koenig gave the first classification of renal tumors based on macroscopic morphology. He divided the tumors into different forms. Later after that in 1883, Paul Grawitz initiated a debate known as the hypernephroma controversy. Grawitz observed the fatty content of the cancer cells and this led him to believe that they were similar to adrenal cells. Adrenal cells are the cells of the adrenal glands, which are located above the kidneys. The kidneys and adrenal glands are surrounded by fat and a thin fibrous layer called the Gerota’s fascia. Grawitz published his observations of the tumors and concluded that the tumors were obtained from renal tissue. He came to this conclusion because only alveolar tumors were from adrenal cells, whereas papillary tumors were from renal tissue.
