Cancer is a disease that have been infecting people for centuries. It is also the leading cause of disease worldwide. According to the cancer research group in the uk, in the year 2012 there was an estimate of 14.1 million new cases of cancer. This was split 53% in males and 47% in females. Several cancer types exists and I will be focusing on breast cancer. In the years 2013 the American Cancer Society stated that there was 64,640 new in Situ cases and 232,340 new invasive cases. In situ cancer is simply means that the cancer growth is confined to the location where it started. This means it has not spread and is far easier to treat. In these trials humans are selected to test out a new drug or form of treatment that has unknown effects on humans. Before this stage is even reached the item that is being tested has gone through several levels of testing before reaching humans, such as animal testing. Regardless of what has been said the most common argument would be “I don’t want to be a guinea pig”. When someone is faced with a terminal illness you have very few options. You can be faced with a given timeframe for your death or partake in a clinical trial that might save your life. In an article for the New York Times Dr. Mukherjee stated “No matter what you do in the lab or in basic science, the ultimate proof of which cancer medicines work comes from clinical trials”. In the same article he also said “Every trial taught doctors something that led to further trials and better results.” (The Road to cancer treatment through clinical trials 2015). These are two powerful statements that mean a lot and tells something to people. We simply cannot know how something will work until we test on humans. In either case the person who is undoing the trial is not losing much. As I said it can be guaranteed death or a chance at living. Most people would choose the
