In the short story “The Treasure of Lemon Brown” by Walter Dean Myers and the novel The Pearl by John Steinbeck the main characters , Greg and Kino, face struggles which change what they think is important in life. While each character faced a different struggle they both valued family in the end.

Kino’s experiences changed what he valued in life. In the beginning of the story Kino values his family. This quickly changes after he found the pearl. He faces internal struggles and soon becomes greedy about what the pearls worth. Also he becomes insecure of about the life he is providing for his family. For example, “In the pearl he saw how they were dressed -- Juana in a shawl stiff with newness and and new skirt, and from under the long skirt Kino could see that she wore shoes ...he himself was dressed in new clothes ,and he carried a new hat… but coyotito --he was the one-- he wore a blue sailor suit…” (pg.24 The Pearl). This shows he already is eager to provide for his family. He quickly begins to get carried away about his plans with the pearl. Slowly after becoming evil he begins to remember family's more important. For example, “ And Kino drew his arm and flung the pearl with all his might.” (pg. 90 Steinbeck). This shows he got rid of the pearl because he realized he loved his family more than a material item.

The genre of this story is short story. The charters in the story are Lemon Brown, Greg, Greg’s dad, and the robbers that tried to steal Lemon Brown’s treasure. For instance, Greg’s father wants him to study for better grades instead of being able to play ball, he disobediently goes off, “[checks] for traffic and [makes] a dash across the street” (Myers 1). In other words, Greg wants to get away from what is forced from him and he dealt with this situation by aimlessly and rebelliously walking down the streets. Most humans sometimes stray away from what is expected by others to cope with the different things they are facing, whether it be perilous, discouraging, or frustrating. Additionally, Lemon Brown desperately protects his valuables and Greg by hurling “his body down the stairs at the men who [has] come to take his treasure” (Myers 4).
