Kino’s experiences changed what he valued in life. In the beginning of the story Kino values his family. This quickly changes after he found the pearl. He faces internal struggles and soon becomes greedy about what the pearls worth. Also he becomes insecure of about the life he is providing for his family. For example, “In the pearl he saw how they were dressed -- Juana in a shawl stiff with newness and and new skirt, and from under the long skirt Kino could see that she wore shoes ...he himself was dressed in new clothes ,and he carried a new hat… but coyotito --he was the one-- he wore a blue sailor suit…” (pg.24 The Pearl). This shows he already is eager to provide for his family. He quickly begins to get carried away about his plans with the pearl. Slowly after becoming evil he begins to remember family's more important. For example, “ And Kino drew his arm and flung the pearl with all his might.” (pg. 90 Steinbeck). Greg would not pay attention to is father's lectures to better his future because he hears it all the time and lost interest. His father gives him these lectures because he wants Greg to have a better future than he did himself. For example, “...How hard he had worked to pass the test, Greg had heard the story too many times to be interested now”(Holt pg.18). In this quote it shows he doesn’t value his father. Once he meets Lemon Brown he quickly realizes his dad's lectures are to help him. So at the end of the story he values his dad and his
