The Treasure Of Lemon Brown Summary

In the story “The Treasure of Lemon Brown” and “The Pearl” the main characters experience internal conflicts. After their experiences, their sense of importance in life changes. Both characters face similar conflicts and resolutions, but they also have some differences. Greg’s experiences changed his sense of what is important after meeting Lemon Brown. In the beginning of the story Greg didn’t listen to his father’s lectures and thought nothing of what it meant. On page 17 it stated “Greg had sat in the small, pale-green kitchen listening, knowing the lecture would end with his father saying he couldn’t play ball with the Scorpions.” This shows that Greg doesn’t really care about what his dad is explaining about his education. In the beginning of the story Kino finds the pearl and sees his family having a bright future. “In the pearl he saw Coyotito sitting at a little desk in a school, just as Kino had once seen through an open door. And Coyotito was dressed in a jacket, and he had on a white collar and a broad silken tie. Moreover, Coyotito was writing on a big piece of paper… “My son will go to school,”he said, and the neighbors were hushed.” (Steinbeck, 25-26) This shows Kino expects great things for his family from the pearl. Kino believes the pearl will give him and his family great things, but does not realize that he may even harm them to get such items. “The two came from the rutted country road into the city, and they were not walking single file, Kino ahead and Juana behind, as usual, but side by side.” (Steinbeck, 88) At the end of the story Kino finally realized that the pearl brought danger to him and his family.
