People may think they know what is important in life, but when things happen it changes their thoughts. The Pearl is a novel written by John Steinbeck and “The Treasure of Lemon Brown is written by Walter Dean Myers. The Pearl is about a baby, named Coyotito, who gets stung by a scorpion, but because his mother, Juana, and father, Kino, don’t have money, Coyotito can’t see a doctor. Kino then goes out and finds a pearl and Coyotito started to look better so Kino wanted to go to the capitol to sell the pearl until Kino kills a man in self-defense. The family then gets away from their village, but Kino finds out that they are being tracked so Kino plans to kill the trackers, but in the chaos Coyotito dies. “The Treasure of Lemon Brown is about …show more content…
‘“And you want to play basketball?” His father’s browns knitted over deep-brown eyes. “That must be some kind of joke. Now you just get into your room and hit those books .”’ (Myers 17). This shows that Greg thinks that basketball is important in life. This also shows that Greg thinks basketball is so important that he puts basketball before school. “He spoke softly, “We will be married-in the church.” All of these things he saw in the lucent pearl and he said, “We will have new clothes.” “A rifle,” he said. “Perhaps a rifle.” (Steinbeck 24-25). This is important because this shows Kino talking about what he thinks is important in life. This is also important because Kino may try to put things like getting a rifle before his family. Kino and Greg both want what they think is important in life, but some new experiences change what they think is important in …show more content…
“‘...there was this letter saying Jesse got killed in the war. Broke my heart, truly did.”’ (Myers 25). Greg now understands his father because of Lemon Brown’s story. Greg is now going to change what he thinks is important in life because of his experience with Lemon Brown. “And then Kino’s brain cleared from its red concentration and he knew the sound-the keening, moaning, rising hysterical cry from the little cave in the side of the stone mountain, the cry of death.” (Steinbeck 87). Kino has to change what he thinks is important in life because someone important to him is dying. Kino is also finding out that he should have put his family before what he thought was important.
