The Treasure Of Lemon Brown Essay

People often think most of their lives; this will happen, or that will happen, or this is the only thing that matters, but their opinions will probably change. In the story “The Treasure of Lemon Brown” by Walter Dean Myers, and The Pearl by John Steinbeck, the authors show us that just because somebody thinks something, it does not make it true. In The Pearl, the main character Kino finds a giant pearl and is consumed by wealth, but later learns that all he really needs is his family. In “The Treasure of Lemon Brown,” a teenager named Greg is longing to play basketball, but can not; then he meets a washed up old blues singer that tells Greg a story that changes his perspective on life. Kino and Greg both experience what it is like to “know” …show more content…
“He hadn’t been allowed to play basketball” (Myers 17). This shows he had been wanting to play basketball in high school. This is important because it shows he had wanted to play basketball, but could not. “‘My son will go to school...My son will read and open the great books, and my son will write and know writing’” (Steinbeck 25/26). These are some very important details of the beginning of their stories, and some important life changing experiences will happen …show more content…
‘“You really think that treasure of yours is worth fighting for?’ asked Greg ‘against a pipe?’” Lemon says “‘What else a man got ‘cepting what he can pass on to his son’” (Myers 25/26) One may notice how Greg’s ideas might change after hearing and experiencing this. In addition, he may start to appreciate the little treasures more. “‘If it’s a coyote, this will stop it,’ said the watcher as he raised his gun… Kino knew something was wrong… the cry of death” (Steinbeck 86/87) One can see that having the pearl now, is close to useless. This is because that now Coyotito is dead, they cannot send him to school. While there was many times where problems were almost fixed, the next paragraph will say how they were.
In the end, everything sort of worked out, and Kino and Greg learned what was truly important. “Greg thought about the lecture his dad knew he would give him, and smiled” (Myers 26). This shows Greg is looking forward to his dad’s lecture. This is important because he used to hate listening to his dad’s boring old lectures, but now he is happy to hear what his father has to say because he heard about Lemon Brown’s
