Explanatory Essay “The decisions you make are a choice of values that reflect your life in every way.” -Alice Waters. Walter Dean Myers short story “The Treasure of Lemon Brown” explores the values of Greg Ridley, a fourteen year old who wants to play basketball, but can’t because of his math grades. Also in John Steinbeck’s novel “The Pearl” Kino ends up being corrupted by the great pearl and how it ended up messing up his values about family. In both “The Treasure of Lemon Brown” and “The Pearl” the main characters experience conflict that ends up changing their views of what is important in life. The conflict in “The Treasure of Lemon Brown” is about how Greg isn’t making the grades he is supposed to in math and is not able to play basketball because of it …show more content…
Greg’s understanding is a result of Lemon Brown’s story about his Son and he knows their fathers are alike and both want the best for their sons. Although a chance conversation with a stranger was enough to change Greg’s values, it may not be enough for others.
Similarly in “The Pearl” Kino also has a conflict that changes his new view of what is important in life, which makes him value the pearl more than his family. For example, when his wife Juana tries to throw the pearl in the ocean “He struck her in the face with his clenched fist and she fell among the boulders, and kicked her in the side.” This shows that Kino cares more about the pearl more than family and is willing to hurt his own wife for the pearl.
