9th grade Lit. H Trayvon Martin Imagine you being a in a car, late at night keeping an eyes and ears on ever little noise, and shadow that comes your way. You see a young man, walking and you think he’s up to no good. You can see him walking with his head downward with his hands in his pockets. You feel that you’re in some kind of danger, but you don’t know what to do. Do you pull the trigger? Before the incident happened, Trayvon was walking home with his hands in the pockets of his that he was wearing. At no point in time did he pull out a gun or weapon of any kind nor threaten Zimmerman. Still Zimmerman felt unsafe and thus led to him killing Trayvon Martin. Some may say that it was appropriate for Zimmerman to kill Trayvon because it was self-defense and it falls under the “Stand your Ground” law. However, the law “permits the use of deadly force when someone reasonably feels he/ she is at risk of great bodily harm in a confrontation”. Trayvon didn’t confront Zimmerman before the shooting, Zimmerman says that he circled his car. Trayvon couldn’t have been that close to Zimmerman car because if he was, Zimmerman would’ve shot Trayvon right then and there. The only time that Trayvon and Zimmerman really came in contact with each other was after he began to shoot. If Trayvon didn’t touch Zimmerman or do anything that was harmful to Zimmerman, why was it okay to shoot? Because Zimmerman is a neighborhood watch volunteer/ police officer, he should be trained to know how to handle a situation like this appropriately. He could’ve simply told Trayvon to get on his knees and put his hands up if he really felt unsafe. Instead he felt that he needed to take Trayvon’s life which took it way too
