In early Islamic culture, a transgender woman called a mukhannathun, a woman who had been born a male but with natural femininity, was accepted and allowed to have relations with men or women. The mukhannathum held an important position in society, associated with music and entertainment, and are stated in the Qur’an as companions of women. They were companions of Prophet Muhammad and his wives, and close enough to accompany them in their homes. However, this is significant as a woman’s chamber is known to be a holy place for Muslims, and is forbidden to strangers and most unrelated men.…

It is 2016, and in today’s world, gender is but a place on your lower body. People can identify as the opposite gender than they were born with, or identify as both genders, and even identify as no gender at all. It has become a personal issue that is not yet fully accepted into society. If someone finds out you are a transgender, they have the right to refuse service to you or kick you out, no questions asked. Transgender people are treated differently because of how they identify themselves.…

For transgender Americans, the fight for equality is not over. While the recent changes in laws affecting LGBT individuals have done a great deal to improve the situation, the fact remains that a portion of the population is still denied the most basic of human rights. Something as simple as using the bathroom has become the new battleground for civil rights, as many states attempt to pass laws that restrict bathroom usage to the gender on someone’s birth certificate. While the number of transgender Americans seems small at an estimated 0.3 percent, this is still a significant number of people who are unable to feel comfortable using a public bathroom (Wong). Not only is avoiding the bathroom a health risk, forcing transgender Americans to use the bathroom of the biological gender has led to verbal harassment and physical violence.…

I believe that leadership with diversity awareness is a key element to any strong leader. Keeping in mind the sensitivity, and needs of the key members of your community is a must for any community educator, and their awareness of those needs and characteristics should always be considered in program development. I believe this topic should be a yearly focus for training and discussions. A focus to learn and adapt to participant's diversity needs should always remain a focus for a strong, well rounded, full inclusive program.…

As it is becoming less taboo for people to talk about and share their sexuality and gender identification, more people are sharing their “coming out” experiences to inspire others in their situations to do the same. Each person’s experience is different; some find it relatively easy and liberating, and some find themselves in life-threatening situations. In their video “Coming Out as Transgender Agender”, ChandlerNWilson, is able to address many different factors for why sharing their gender identification is difficult to their mother. I chose to transcribe the moments leading up to their utterance of the words “I identify as agender” where they address their reasoning for deciding to come out to their mother. During this excerpt, Chandler is only talking to their mother.…

Over the years, the controversy of transgender has changed and blossomed into an ongoing topic of discussion. The real question however, is what makes someone transgender to begin with. According to Kate Bornnstein in My Gender Workbook, you are transgendered if you don’t fit perfectly in the gendered pyramid, are gaining a different perspective on gender, are questioning or studying gender, or has the desire or courage to own their transgressions against gender is transgender. I agree with Bornstein, I feel like if you ever have to question yourself or your identity and then study or research it then you are transgressing. Transgender to me is finding something out about yourself you don’t like…

Is the out coming law of transgenders not being allowed in the U.S army is part of having equality or not? President Trump announced on Twitter first about the ban against transgender in the United State military. Trump cited “tremendous medical cost and disruption” by transgender services in the United States military as his reason for the ban. He decided on this decision when the Capitol was quietly arguing about all the money going to transgender medication and therapy for those who were in the military with this transformation in their personal life. He ended the controversy in the capitol by simply placing the law to support equality.…

The two trends relating to coming out for gay teens is that of being left by family and friends and that of being bullied by peers, yet “The Internet also has eased isolation for gay teens, offering a place for socializing and support, says Stephanie Sanders of the Kinsey Institute for Research in Sex, Gender, and Reproduction in Bloomington, Ind.” (Elias, 2007) Before the internet, gay teens had to make big decisions on who to tell and when to tell them due to fear of being isolated, yet knowing what may or may not transpire by joining a group on the internet may ease the pain of coming out for gay teens Another trend relating to gay teens coming out is “In the case of coming out youths, not only must they negotiate the oppressive society at large, but they must also deal with the extra pressures of living within the often-homophobic contexts of their families and school environments.” (Bernal, 2005) in which case I will tell you from when these articles have been published and now, more teens are able to say they are either bi-sexual or gay to their peers and be accepted than a decade ago. It seems to me that more teens are experimenting with their sexuality now than in the past. As a mother, I hear of teen girls who say they are “bi-sexual” or “transgender” yet still are accepted by their peers for who they are…

Transgender Transgender is not a choice or a phase it is a consistent gender identity that as a society we need to learn to accept. Transgender means that you do not identify your gender as the sex that you were assigned to at birth. Transgender people have the hardest time being accepted by their own families and loved ones, which really presents a problem in the transgender community. In recent studies showed that 75% of transgender individuals have experienced significant rejection from their families which brings up the issues of why so many families of a transgender have a hard time accepting the reality at hand and some never do. Being accepted in today’s society is so difficult because as humans, we are so judgmental, so I can only…

Individuals will often feel a sense of alienation from the society as result of the lack of acceptance due to one’s self-identity. People endeavor to search for their true self and discover their status within the society from socialising with a diverse range of people from various cultures, age, race and gender. This builds a sense of belonging for an individual, as they are able to understand where their stance is in the world. However, the society creates stereotypes by linking certain values and characteristics to each gender. It seems so simple to love, that the comfort of attraction lends itself to everyone and that the subtleties of interest are selfsame, by instinct at least; even so, it’s said that we’re conditioned to love, but to me, it’s not that we’re conditioned to it as much as we’re in the condition of its capability, simply being human—to love’s as natural as life itself, as typical as sight or sound, as native as a thought of rationality. Trouble, then, comes about when love we know true doesn’t quite liken the love someone else experiences, from which differences and judgements then arise. This is true of many circumstances, but continues to be true for Americans who identify as LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, or Transgendered)—that judgments of them…
