The Transformation Of Telemachus In Homer's Odyssey

In the first four books of the epic poem, The Odyssey, Homer introduces a troubled young boy named Telemachus. In the beginning of Book One Telemachus is portrayed as a spoiled and immature boy who mentally, never grew up. He does not participate in combat, rather he is cooped up in his household with the servants taking care of him, for he never had any parental figures to look up to. Athena, goddess of wisdom and daughter of Zeus, comes down to aid Telemachus. She is there to teach him what is right and what is wrong, leading him on an expedition filled with various life lessons and assisting him as Telemachus slowly transforms into a man similar to his father. Growing up he did not have a role model, an individual to venerate. The servants in the household, especially Eurycleia, devoted themselves into taking care of Telemachus but in the end he was still not ready to venture off out of the nest. Telemachus is a man with good intentions but he lacks bravery and self-confidence depicting him as a feeble man. Not only that but Telemachus is a gloomy pessimist. Whenever Odysseus is brought up he denies that he is father’s son due to the fact that since he hasn’t seen him in so long, he second hands their opinion and starts thinking otherwise. Telemachus does hold potential. Even though he may not show it in the beginning he has a raging fire burning deep within him, a fire of passion and determination. With the guidance of a wise goddess and withstanding trials and tribulations Telemachus has come a long way. Sometimes it takes just one individual to change another. From assisting Telemachus mature to molding him into a work of art Athena has made a big impact in Telemachus’ life. Athena has nurtured him into becoming a confident young man who had the ability to take on the suitors. He has prospered exceedingly, going from a Telemachus went from a boy who could not even stand for himself into being able to conquer fear.
