Explanatory Essay Transformation obviously create fear. This can be seen in the following three stories as well. Jovce Oate’s “Where is Here,” Arthur Tress’ “Dream Collector” and Julio Cortazar’s “House Taken Over” uses transformation of an ordinary person and an ordinary setting to show us how easily circumstances can change. The transformation in the three stories strikes anxiety, fear, suspicion, or uneasiness. In the following it will explain and show of ways transformation creates fear.
Joyce Carol Oates, “Where is Here ?”transformation frights readers because the setting of the story goes from being a normal evening to a night of abnormal people and angst. It is effective because the reader feels safe and secure because the environment in the story,so when the transformation begins and changes the reader feels fear and unsafe. For example, “ We liked the house, it was old and spacious it kept the memories of great grandparents, our grandfather, our parents and the whole of childhood” (37). This is showing the normal environment, giving the reader security and reassurance. On the contrary, “They’ve taken over the back part, not wanting to look back you could here the noises still muffled but louder, just behind us. They’ve taken over.” (40,41).
