It is his father, who was a famous author, who drove Bras into his career and inspired him throughout his life. The very first chapter in the book is dealing with how Bras is living in the shadow of his father. One such example is in this chapter where his father is holding an event that overshadows Bras birthday, “We’re all somebody’s son, right?” (Ba and Moon 29). He has held some contempt for his father’s success but when he has a drink with a bartender who inherited his bar from his father, he begins to understand his father and his inheritance of his father. Like the bartender, Bras inherited his profession from his father, he inherited the bad as well as the good. Anna is the wife of Bras whom he meets shortly after breaking up with Olinda. Having seen her while buying groceries, he knew that she was the one who could make him happy. Anna plays a much bigger and a far more important role in Bras life. Anna plays the role of loving mother and wife. She is the woman who helps him along, she acts as his anchor in life and as a reliable source of support, “But she had gotten used to having him around, and things seemed to be more difficult when he was away. Right now, she resents him for not being there so badly… she could just kill him.” (Ba and Moon 191). When he is away he can count on her to take care of their son. Anna is the strongest type of woman who can work and take care of their son when the father cannot, she reads to the son every night and supports bras even when she is detests him for being away.
