The Transcendental movement influenced many modern ideas that are applied to our daily lives. Transcendentalism is a philosophy or a way to live your life. Although it originated in Europe there were many influential American Transcendentalists. Authors and poets like Emerson, Thoreau, Whitman and Dickinson shaped Transcendentalism in America. I personally do not abide by all themes of Transcendentalism but there are some in which I think are very intuitive. The principles of Transcendentalism that I believe in are: standing up for yourself, using imagination, and the splendor of nature.
Being an original person is important in a Transcendentalists eyes. As an individual you have the right to shape your own character and not be influenced by someone else. Anyone can express their own thoughts and ideas without having to change for someone else. Emerson’s maxim “Insist on yourself, never imitate” describes this ideal perfectly. He is saying that we need to be leaders and not a followers. At this age it's easy to follow the crowd. But by being your own person you can make your life so much more enjoyable. …show more content…
Sometimes you have to look beyond what's realistic and use your imagination. Transcendentalists like the idea of being creative and using your own mind to create your destiny. There are many principles that fall under the category of imagination. For example a Transcendentalist believe in intuitive thought or whatever you believe to be true becomes true. I think that this is taking this a little too far but if you were to believe in this using your imagination to form these thoughts would be needed. I think a maxim that touches on this subject is stated by Emerson, “Nothing is at last sacred but the integrity of your own mind.” Your thoughts are not always the right ones,but using your imagination will make you go farther than if you were to never dream at
