Africans established the foundation for humanity, being they were the first civilization created. During this period they were developing reading, writing, and a language form. Also, they were building pyramids and creating various technologies, allowing them to thrive as a civilization. However, as the world began to populate and integrate, Africans became targeted by other civilizations. Resulting in the trans-Atlantic slave trade that extracted over millions of Africans from their home. Once, slavery had ended hundreds of years later, African origin had become a faint memory. “Once purchased, coastal merchants commonly branded the slaves with a symbol of the trading company or voyage owner on either their chest or back as a means of marking their commercial property and distinguishing their cargoes from the rest” (Chnm). This was a tactic used by whites to dehumanize Africans, and erase their African roots. Often times, they forced slaves to change their name, so there African origin could not be traced. With the intentions of suppressing the African culture, by making one feel they had no place in society. Furthermore, slaves did not receive the opportunity to attend a school and learn about their heritage. Unlike whites who could attend school and gain knowledge of American society.
