The Trail: A Short Story

Improved Essays
It was a cool November evening on the trail. I was far on the trail beyond my usual boundaries set by my parents. Usually they told me I can ride no more than two miles from home, and some times when it is snowing they say if I can’t see home i’m too far. That day I was too caught up in the gallop my horse wouldn’t stop. My horse, Bogi has always been a good mount and he knew the trail, and he knew it was time to go. “ Something's wrong with you ” I said weary. My heart was now pounding. The wind was howling gently at first and soon after it sounded as if there was a pack of dying wolves behind us.
I looked back but no sign of life. Bogi started to whinney with fear. There was no sign of home either, and the wind brought

The door was just tall enough to bring Bogi inside. When I brought Bogi in I felt, no, I knew I was being watched, from a distance though. Probably a rat I thought. Behind me I heard and felt a small breeze like a rabbit was passing by. Before I had any time to think I heard a screeching snort from a horse but not my horse. I tied Bogis reins to to a staircase pole and peered out the window of the poor conditioned house. Outside in the deep blizzard I saw a dark horse. A black stallion and it was screeching like a chimp. I could not dare go outside. My mind was debating wether I should go outside and help the horse or cower from this wild horse’s mean nature. The muscled horse turned to me, showing his furious red eyes along with his coated master mounted on his back. Fear was pumping in me faster than my heart beat. The horse came at a full gallop toward the house, what i had thought to be a safe haven from harm. I did not think clear and I ran to Bogi, quickly untied his reins and attempted to get on his back.
Bogi did not let me on but only stared and snorted at the other stallion. Once the horses met eye to eye I was cowering behind Bogi. If I made one wrong move the other horse and rider may hurt me. The horse and rider were close enough to me for me to see that the rider had no

I found the ending of Black Beauty, by Anna Sewell, to be a satisfying ending. It seemed to wrap things up nicely. After Beauty is injured and nearly overworked to death, he ends up in a beautiful home surrounded by people who care for him for the rest of his life. Although it is rather bittersweet, as the last line reminds us of everything Beauty has lost: “often, before I am quite awake, I fancy I am still in the orchard at Birtwick, standing with my old friends under the apple trees” (49.22). This line shows that even in the comfort of his lovely home, Black Beauty still wishes he were somewhere else.…

The old saying, “stop and smell the roses,” isn’t far from true. Life can get extremely overwhelming, and sometimes one needs to stop and cherish the basic items in life. My first reason is horses are a symbol of freedom and the poet wants to be free. A quote that supports this is “Because I have come to the fence at night, the horses arrive also from their ancient stable” (Wrigley 1.1-2). When going to the POL web site and look up Robert Wrigley it can be found that he grew up in a coal mining town. Using this evidence, the meaning of the poem is wanting to be free. Horses are a symbol of freedom and the poet used them in his poem because he wants to be free.…

I find myself standing in a field in rural 1950s. There is a light breeze and the smell of the blueberry pie sitting on the farmer's windowsill lingers in the air. Directly in front of me is a large, faded, red barn. To my left is a rope swing that the farmer's children play on, and to my right is a trough for the pigs. I am at the Zuckerman farm, home of the famous pig, Wilbur.…
