The Tragic Hero Of Odysseus: A Hero

Odysseus was a hero due to his strength both physically and mentally throughout his journey. By “Which of them must endure with me to take up the great beam and spin it in the cyclops eye when sweet sleep had come over him” (Book 9 332-335) The quote shows us how Odysseus is strong mentally by how well thought out his plan is, and shows us his physical strength by taking the great beam with his men. Without both his mental and physical strength he and his men would have died in that cave. Furthermore in the ninth book it states “I spoke to all my companions words of courage so none shall be in panic and back out.” (Book 9 375-377) This shows how his mental state is strong willed and he is strong enough to become a pillar for the rest of his

Since the beginning of recorded history, man has been telling grand adventure stories; exciting tales of heroes defeating enemies, seeking treasure, and experiencing perilous tribulations. “The Odyssey”, by the Greek poet Homer, is one of the most famous epics to date. It follows the adventures of the Greek king, Odysseus, as he travels through the Mediterranean, trying to return home. The protagonist of an epic is called the “epic hero”, and he must exhibit certain characteristics to fulfill this title: he must represent the values of his culture, be either aided or hindered by the gods, and demonstrate one or more character flaws. Because he meets all three criteria, Odysseus can be considered the definitive epic hero.…

Throughout the story Odysseus does not take actions when his men are being killed or eaten so that he can live, like he did in the giant’s cave, when Scylla attacked and when Zeus struck them with a lightning bolt and the evidence that proves Odysseus takes these actions to protect himself reads, “why not/ take these cheeses, get them stowed, come back, / throw open all pens, and make a run for it? / We’ll drive the kids and lambs aboard. We say/ put out again on the good salt water! / Ah, / how sounds that…

In “The Odyssey”, Odysseus’s hubris is an advantage because it tricks individuals into viewing the almighty epic hero as more of an iconic and courageous figure. When Odysseus and his crew, cleverly fight off and get past the horrendous cyclops Polyphemus, Odysseus bravely taunts the beast to make sure he knows never to attack him or his crew again. In fury, Polyphemus pounds out to Odysseus’s boat, forcing Odysseus to get the “longest boat hook out” and begin “fending off” his crew (95-96). This act of fearlessness shows Odysseus’s crew that he’s willing to protect them for the future, even if that means sacrificing his own safety. Any other person would’ve taken that get out of jail free card, and quickly got off the island, waiting like bait for Polyphemus to strike again.…

Odysseus has protected his family and the people who stand with him in the ways he knows best, so I believe that in the Odyssey by Homer that the main character Odysseus is a hero even though he had lost his men to the gods and monsters he came in contact with and had lied to his family he had to protect the people he loved from others that want to hurt him thought his loved ones. Odysseus is a hero in my view from the way that he tricks the Cyclops in to believing that his name is Nohbdy instead if Odysseus so when he and his men escape the Cyclops cannot tell who had been there. The reason Odysseus told the Cyclops that his name was Nohbdy was that he knew that if someone would have asked the cyclops who had tricked him and they could be one that would not know that he was alive and might be one of his enemy’s. When he was planning a way to escape eight of his men were eaten by the cyclops from the long wait from the making of the plain but it was one of the sacrifices he had to make for a better out come from them…

Anyone who is successful in completing a gallant and courageous act, can be considered a hero. In The Odyssey, Odysseus is an admirable hero because he uses strategy instead of strength to overcome several obstacles. Homer presents this in Odysseus’s use of deception, the route he chooses to get home, his choice of words and his use of disguises. To overcome a hurdle one may wish for a great deal of strength. Yet when Odysseus came in contact with a giant Cyclops, he never questioned nor focused on his lack of vitality.…

This illustrates that Odysseus is a hero because he saved some of his men, including himself, by blinding the Cyclops. Accompanying that, Odysseus is heroic because he is smart. The text states, “I tied my men under their bellies and grabbed hold of the largest ram of all” (Homer 28). This example proves that Odysseus is a hero because he thought of a way to escape from the Cyclops, which was to tie themselves under the bellies of the sheep. Furthermore, Odysseus is heroic because he is powerful.…

The whole reason why it takes Odysseus so long to reach home is that Odysseus needs an epic challenge to prove that he is an epic hero. Odysseus, the main character in Homer’s The Odyssey, is not a hero. He shows many non-heroic traits by today’s standards, such as his unending arrogance and need to prove himself, his unfaithfulness to his wife Penelope, and his bloodlust and unjust killings. Throughout the book Odysseus shows these characteristics through his actions. He Insults a Cyclops, he stays with and sleeps with a nymph for seven long years and he slaughters many maids who barely did anything wrong.…
