Who is Arthur Miller and why should you care? Well first he was considered one of the greatest American playwrights of the 20th century. Born in Harlem, New York in 1915 later died at the age of 89 in 2005 without delay Arthur had a writing career of 70 years. His first great success was “Death of Salesman”. It opened on Broadway in 1949 and won the Pulitzer Prize and to mention many Tonys. Likewise with “All my Sons” and “The Crucible”. He wanted to leave the world better than when he came in. Miller liked to point out problems with society but on the other hand he had his own problems as well. In 1956 he divorced his first wife Mary Slattery whom he had 2 kids with. In that case he recovered from Mary fairly quick because not even a month later he married Hollywood sex symbol Marilyn Monroe. Through their marriage, Marilyn struggled with a personal problems that she didn’t understand and a drug addiction. In the meantime Arthur didn’t write much during their marriage except for “The Misfits” which many critics say was not his best work. They divorced after 4 years together. Miller struggled with many personal issues throughout his life, but in spite of that he never stopped writing. He almost never writes about himself, he always talked about world issues like the death of John F Kennedy and different movements that were happening during the late 80’s.
