Drama Essay In the Tragedy of Antigone, we see a young girl who has been cursed her entire life starting with her father marrying his own mother to her brothers being killed at the hands of one another. Since Antigone is the daughter of Oedipus, who can also be considered a Greek Tragedy because he also contained a tragic flaw while not, being able to escape the fate of the Gods. This play shows Antigone as a strong protagonist character where she becomes a tragedy herself, while contributing to the tragedy of others, and all the while exemplifying her tragic flaw through out the play thus proving how much of a tragic character she really is. With the chorus they represent the majority of the town, which is normally the old men of the town. These old men exemplify the feeling that we as an audience may not be able to comprehend through the characters alone. Creon’s interactions between Antigone show how arrogant he is, whereas Antigone can be thought of almost as a feminist, she is strong, and determined. Antigone proves her determination through out the play, she constantly stands up for her beliefs, “No, he has no right to keep me from my own (Sophocles 486).” Antigone is not afraid of Creon who is thought to control whether she lives or dies, but then with death she steps up to him again by killing herself before he can. The play is also symbolic of the Greek culture, especially with the mentioning of the Greek gods through the chorus. At one point the chorus explains that the Gods have finally driven a family to their ruins, “Blest, they are truly blest who all their lives have never tasted devastation. For others, once the gods have rocked a house to its foundations the ruin will never cease, cresting on and on from one generation on throughout the race (Sophocles 500).” This represents that many people within the audience that many people may not understand …show more content…
Even though the battle between Antigone and Creon is the main plot of the play these two are also thought to represent good versus evil, or even men versus women. Antigone represents the good and the thought of morally right ideals, “Why, in the name of all my father’s gods why cant you wait till I am gone-must you abuse me to my face? (Sophocles 506).” She is the only one who really believes that burying her brother, Polynices, is a good idea. Therefore she has to complete the task of appeasing the Gods, and burying her brother all by herself. Her own sister will not help her, which implies there is another battle within this play. With Ismene being apart of the play, she is able to amplify how intense of a character Antigone is, since Antigone does not care about life or death she is just worried about burying her bother whereas Ismene stays quite in order to stay alive. Some may see it as rash versus reasonable. Even with all this pressure, and no support behind her she is never scared or worried because she knows it must be done. Thus exemplifying her tragic flaw of loyalty and determination again while also showing her fight versus evil for what she believes to be
