The Tragic Hero: Bo Jackson As An Epic Hero

Being considered an epic hero requires exceeding in lots of different aspects of life. Strength, humility, likeability; the list could go on and on. Very few people, especially in today’s world, are able to have the perfect combination of all of these attributes. Bo Jackson is an epic hero because of all the challenges he faced, he has incredible strength, and was one of the most humble athletes of his time. While Bo was very naturally gifted, there were times where it seemed like all the odds were stacked against him. During baseball season of his senior year of college, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers wanted Bo to play football for them right out of college. They told Bo it was ok with the NCAA if he were to come visit them. It ended up being …show more content…
Bo was the most humble athlete there was. When he was offered positions on both Auburn and Alabama’s football teams, he picked Auburn because he knew he would get playing time during his freshman year. With that decision, he went on to help the team beat Alabama for the first time in nearly 10 years. Bo did not care about winning all of the titles for himself or even his team, he just wanted to spend as much time as he possibly could doing what he loved. That goes for when he played professionally too. He was quoted saying “Whatever comes after baseball season is a hobby for Bo Jackson,” (NY Times). He could have focused all of his attention on one sport and became the best player that sport has ever seen, but he didn’t worry about being the best. That humility is just another reason why he is an epic hero. It takes a lot to become an epic hero, but it all must be effortless. Like Beowulf, Bo did not intend to become an epic hero, he was just doing what he believed to be right. Bo Jackson is the perfect, present day example of what an epic hero truly is.
