Things Fall Apart tells a story about a man named Okonkwo, whose life falls apart because of his actions. Okonkwo met his tragic fate through the actions he took in his life. Some reasons that make Okonkwo culpable for his own demise, is that he would do anything to not seem weak to others in his village. For example, Okonkwo killed a boy who called him father to not seem weak in front of the village. He also beat his children and wives for simple errors they made. Additionally, Okonkwo wanted war with the European missionaries, but instead killed one of their messengers, which ended in Okonkwo taking his own life. I believe Okonkwo’s fate was led by his own decisions.

Everyone in Umuofia decided that they would either go to war or have Mbaino give a young man and a girl who was a virgin. Mbaino knew they would not win in a war with Umuofia so they decided to give a young man named Ikemefuna and a virgin girl. Ikemefuna would go to live with Okonkwo while the virgin girl would go with Ogbuefi to become his wife. After a few years, Ikemefuna had gotten used to his live with Okonkwo and his family. So much so, that he began to call Okonkwo father. Then just as Ikemefuna had started to forget about his family in Mbaino, the Oracle of the Hills and the Caves decided that Ikemefuna should be killed outside of the village as is custom. Ogbuefi told him, “That boy that calls you father, bear no hands in his death”(pg. 121). Okonkwo was advised to not kill Ikemefuna himself. Even though he was told not to, Okonkwo was the one to kill Ikemefuna. Okonkwo was not able to eat or sleep for a few days because he felt bad for killing
