The main character’s father is struggling with the fact that he just witnessed a brutal murder and can not get over it. During the time that Cory starts to struggle with believing in his dad is when his dad sees the murder at Saxton Lake. Mr. Mackenson said “That car might have sunken to the center of the earth.” This is right after Cory’s dad tries to save the victim and he starts to talk to the Sheriff. This is important because it’s the start of how Cory starts to see his dad as not being the hero he portrays him. It also is the beginning of Cory becoming disappointed. “That was the night my father’s cry awakened me in the dark”(McCammon 29). This the night after Mr. Mackenson tried to help the murdered person out of the car in Saxon Lake. During this period of his dad crying he reliesed that his dad isn't the hero he thought he was. Also this quote is a very important part of the book because it is questioning his faith with relationship with his father. But overall he takes away from this that no one is perfect and mostly that he has a loss of
