In the Crucible, by Arthur Miller, many people were accused of witchcraft in the Salem witch trials that lasted from 1692 until 1693. These people were accused by children who sought for attention and were overcome with fear. It’s evident that many people played a role in the hysteria and the lives of many people besides the children but, Abigail Williams and Danforth hold the most weight. Abigail and Danforth both let emotions and power overcome their ability of stopping a tragedy from occuring. Danforth holds all responsibility when it comes to the witch hysteria and his ability to determine whether or not what was being accused is the truth. Danforth had been too ignorant of his power and responsibility because every time he was given evidence he waved it off and accused them of trying to overthrow the court. He had been explained and shown evidence that the girls had been lying but he cared more about how the court would look if they called fraud after he signed off hangings and jailings instead of justice. Including with the evidence where people signed off that Elizabeth, Rebecca, and Martha were all good people, he decided to jail them all. Apparently the law was most important for Danforth because when he was asked to postpone the hangings he wouldn’t allow it.
