Odysseus and his men show a great deal of ego, self pursuit for glory when they travel to aeolus, in short Odysseus and his men arrive at the home of Aeolus, god of the winds.They are greeted warmly ,catered for a month in every way, shape and form. In want to leave, Odysseus is given an ox-skin pouch from Aeolus. In it are all the winds accept the west wind, so they do not go off track. Ten days later of sailing, the men are close to home that they can actually see the island. Exhausted, Odysseus falls asleep. Curious and suspicious, his men open the ox skin expecting to find treasure and release heavy squalls in every direction that blow them right back to Aeolus's island. The wind god refuse to help them in any way at all no way at all with the fear he is bad luck. …show more content…
They use and abuse this custom, an example aside book 10 is in cyclops island when they went into polyphemus's cave, hoping for cheese and milk. Doing it everywhere they go, and using it to the maximum like they are kings and to be treated like royalty. But there is still justice at play.
Fate punishes odysseus's men for their dishonorable, unjustified suspicions of their captain, not to mention their inability to show some self-restraint.

Help from the god of the winds, odysseus men boat to Laestrygonians, made up of man eating giants who attack out of nowhere and eat the men out of nowhere, throwing enormous rocks at the ships and impaling the men with their spears.
