Macbeth conscience is slowing fading away due to the power he is receiving. For this reason, Scotland has become weaker as more authority is coming in Macbeth’s path. “I think our country sinks beneath the yoke; it weeps, it bleeds and each new day a gash is added to her wounds”(4.3.44-47). A sign of a wound is blood; blood represents a weakening of the body. The amount of blood that is lost affects the brain the most. Without, oxygen and blood, the brain is unable to function properly. Blood is a necessity that one needs in order to live. The constant stabs are Macbeth’s way of taking control and depriving Scotland of its health. Like a disease, Macbeth slowly kills Scotland on the inside however, not all the signs show right away. Duncan’s eldest son Malcolm has to make up for his absence by curing Scotland with a new king. However, Macbeth has the instinct to cure the country as well. Macbeth mentions curing his country after Lady Macbeth is sick. Shakespeare refers to war and battle to represent a struggling country like Scotland. Macbeth can be seen repeatedly abusing his competence which evokes the destruction of Scotland. Unfortunately for Malcolm, the country, that he sacrifices with his mentality, deteriorates. Macbeth decides to fight Malcolm for the throne, even though he understands the chances of his success are very slim, “I have lived long enough. My way of life / Is fall’n into the sear, the yellow leaf / As honor, love, obedience, troops of friends…”(5.3.25-27). Yellow represents sickness and the end of a life. Macbeth recognizes the limited time he has left, so the statement “Is fall’n into the sear, the yellow leaf” warrants this. Macbeth believes his life is beginning to fade and fall like an autumn leaf. Leaves are a symbol of a fresh start. In the summer, they blossom, while in the winter they rupture and fly away. In this case, Macbeth blossomed when he became the king and started to fade
