From the very beginning, Hamlet is burdened with horrendous news of his father’s murder. As well as Hamlet not knowing if the news is true or not, because it came from some ghost or demon that could just be tricking him. Even when hearing this news he remains calm and thinks things through. However this revenge is what begins his journey into anger and madness. In William Shakespeare’s play, The Tragedy of Hamlet, he created a strong intellectual character and his journey down a hill into madness due to his blinding vengeance over his father’s death.

To do this he threw together a play that happens to be just like his father’s murder, so that he can observe his step-father’s reaction. This is an example of Hamlet remaining intellectual in his actions. His step-father ends up leaving mid-play to go pray for forgiveness. What Hamlet does next is quite an opposite of his usual character. He sees that his step-father is praying and decides not to kill him because he is praying; fear of him going to heaven if he were to kill him when he’s praying. However, this is very dumb and ignorant of Hamlet. He set up this big play to see if his step-father was the murderer or not, and when he confirms his belief, he decides to delay it. Than to make it worse, instead of waiting until after this step-father was done praying, he leaves. Claudius secretly gave the men he sent to take Hamlet to England, with orders to kill Hamlet. However, Hamlet’s ship was attacked by pirates and that he’s being sent back. This sparked an idea in Claudius’s mind. Laertes, the son of Polonius, ironically wanted to avenge his father and kill Hamlet. So Claudius sets up “an innocent fencing match” between Hamlet and Laertes, but Laertes’ sword is poisoned, as well as the cup from which Hamlet is to drink from. This is when all the domino effects from Hamlet’s revenge start falling down. Laertes ends up getting cut by his own blade, as well as cutting Hamlet. Hamlet’s mother, Gertrude, takes a drink from the cup. Hamlet than takes Laertes blade and stabs Claudius, than forces him to drink the rest of the cup. This wraps up Hamlet’s revenge. Hamlet ends up getting everyone in the play killed except for one person who lives to tell their tale. William Shakespeare, the author, wraps up the revenge by finally letting Hamlet carry out his revenge. According to the Encyclopedia. Issues & Controversies, “… he sets a mood of quiet acceptance and ultimate reconciliation that was a fitting close for his literary career.” This quote means that Hamlet has his moment of “quiet acceptance” as he finally fulfilled his task and lay to rest his vengeance.
